HISTORY OF SAN DIEGO
The adventure first began in 1542, when
Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo
sailed
into the San Diego Bay and claimed the land for Spain. The popular place to stay in the 1830s was what is known today as
Old Town
. San Diego was under Mexican jurisdiction from 1822 until its capture from a U.S. naval force in 1846. The population greatly increased in 1884 due to the Santa Fe Railroad.
Throughout World War I, San Diego became an important U.S. naval base. Afterwards, it continued to have branches of the military still established there. San Diego's diverse economic base allowed the city to boom in near the end of the 20th century. An urban revitalization effort included the likes of the Horton Plaza, an expensive shopping mall known for its dramatic architecture, and a trolley system.
